An atom is the smallest particle of an element. When atoms are put together they form molecules and molecules form cells. A cell has a region called Mitochondria where chemical energy is manufacture and eventually produces free radicals.
The Mitochondria uses oxygen as an important ingredient in its respiration process. Without oxygen a cell can’t “breath”, however, oxygen “rusts” cells. While undergoing the respiration process some electrons are swept away by oxygen, leaving behind an unstable molecule that is missing an electron, the result? Free radicals.
There are millions of processes occurring in the body and all of them require oxygen. Approximately 2-3% of the oxygen consumed by every cell is converted into free radicals.
Over time, oxygen can kill or destroy cells and eventually lead to disease, premature aging or even death. The body naturally produces free radicals but an overproduction can lead to internal or external damage. When there is an imbalance between free radicals and detoxification we have what is called “oxidative stress”. These oxidants can also be produced or introduced by external agents such as pollution, stress, etc. The cells within the body are “oxidized”, causing the breakdown of cells, DNA, proteins, and fat. By definition an antioxidant is a molecule capable of reducing oxidative damage (damage due to oxygen) which is likely caused by free radicals. Normal bodily functions regularly strip an oxygen molecule of an electron, making it unstable. The molecule then tries to stabilize itself by taking an electron from a nearby molecule. This “theft” leads to free radicals.
The body usually produces its own antioxidants but if the damage is too extensive or the menace is too high then this production is never enough. A diet rich in antioxidant foods can help, but if you take into consideration that on a daily basis the body is bombarded by smoke, pollution, stress, etc., you can easily understand why it is so important to seek added help.
A number of enzymes and vitamins are known to counteract the damaging effects of oxidation. Some enzymes are produced by the body. The most common ones are Superoxide Dismutase, Catalase, and Glutathione. These antioxidants break-down the harmful radicals and help eliminate them through the system in the form of bodily waste.
Antioxidants and the Skin
If free radicals are formed when an electron is taken from an oxygen molecule then it makes perfect sense that you can eliminate free radicals by furnishing them with that missing electron.
This is exactly what antioxidants do. They willingly give up their electrons to free radicals and in turn the free radical no longer needs to steal an electron from a neighboring molecule. This does not, however, stop the aging process but it does keep it from accelerating due to sun damage, smoke or pollution.

Protecting your skin from the sun

How to protect your skin from UV rays
It’s useless to think that we can hide ourselves from the sun and only come out at night or to think that during winter months UV rays magically disappear or become less dangerous. So it’s best to wise up and protect ourselves before, during and after UV exposure and not just sun exposure.
First line of defense:
UV rays are made-up of two types: UV-A and UV-B rays. UV-A rays are ultraviolet rays that come directly from the sun and penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere, while UV-B rays are ultraviolet rays that come from the Earth, in other words, rays produced by light bulbs, computer screens, etc. To protect ourselves from these harmful rays it’s essential that we use a sunscreen with an adequate SPF factor.
This can easily be estimated by calculating the minutes it takes for un-protected skin to turn red when exposed to the sunlight and multiplying it by the SPF factor. For example: if it takes your skin 10 minutes to turn red and you are using SPF 15, then you should multiply 15 by 10 and you will get the number of minutes you can be out in the sun. However, this only means that to be fully protected you should re-apply every time your protection has expired or your skin has been washed or has sweated.
But it still isn’t a sure bet. Sunscreens containing Benzophenone-3 are effective against UVA and UVB rays but are not recommended for children and have been found present in adult urine after a holiday in the sun. So, as you can tell, you can’t really rely on sunscreens to be your only form of protection. So what else can you do?
Second line of defense:
Nature has been kind enough to grant us with natural sun protection. You may have heard of it, it’s called “shade”. To protect your skin from over-exposure it’s recommended that you use SPF factor and stay under the shade, or use protective covering. UV protected garments are costly, but recommended. If you can’t afford this type of protection then we suggest you use a wide rimmed hat, glasses, or umbrella.
You could lather your skin with sunscreen and clothe yourself from head to toe and still get skin cancer or premature aging.
